Clarke & Wright is a UK estate planning practice helping families across England and Wales plan for later life: wills, lasting powers of attorney and related advice. We meet our clients through our own educational seminar programme, which runs in towns across the country every week, and we are one of the faster growing firms in our field, with a national expansion under way.
We are a member firm of the Institute of Professional Willwriters and operate under its code of practice, which is approved by the UK’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute. Client care comes first in how we work: there are no billable hours and no time recording, and every client meeting is recorded so that documents are prepared from the client’s own words.
We are a remote first business. Alongside our UK team we have long standing remote colleagues in the Philippines, with proper equipment, real training and permanent roles. Our India team will be built the same way: a lasting part of the firm, working directly with our UK lawyers. This is not an outsourced experiment.
About the role, and where it leads
You will join as a case handler, looking after clients and their files from day one. That means speaking to clients, answering their questions, chasing what we need, keeping matters moving and working alongside the UK lawyer who drafts the documents.
At the same time you will study. We will put you through the IPW professional examination, the qualification every person who drafts documents at this firm must hold, and we pay for all of it. It is a single textbook and most qualified lawyers are ready within a few months.
As you qualify, you move into drafting: wills first, then lasting powers of attorney, then more complex estates. Your salary moves with you. How fast you make that journey is genuinely up to you.
Our clients are mostly retired people, many of them recently bereaved, who came to one of our seminars. They are trusting us with the most personal decisions they will make. Warmth, patience and plain English matter here as much as legal ability.
What you will do
- Speak to UK clients by telephone and email, every working day
- Own a caseload: keep files moving, chase outstanding information, keep clients informed
- Prepare fact finds from recorded client instruction meetings, and follow up with clients on anything missing
- Carry out identity checks and anti money laundering checks
- Work closely with our UK lawyers, and learn from their review comments
- Study for the IPW professional exam, and begin drafting as you qualify
What you will bring
Essential
- LLB or LLM from a recognised university. Enrolment with a State Bar Council is preferred, and the All India Bar Examination is a plus
- Direct experience of speaking to UK clients by telephone and email, as a regular part of a previous role, for at least one year
- Spoken English that a British client in their seventies will find easy to follow, and written English that is precise and plain
- Willingness to study for and sit the IPW professional exam, starting before you join
- A reliable, high quality internet connection, a quiet and private place to take client calls, and dependable power. This is a client facing role and we will test this at interview
- Comfortable with an independent contractor arrangement and responsible for your own Indian tax
Helpful, not required
- Any UK private client, probate or estate planning exposure
- Anti money laundering, source of funds or ID verification experience
- HM Land Registry, UK case management systems, or UK client portals
- Experience with elderly or vulnerable clients
Not required at all
- UK wills or lasting power of attorney experience. Genuinely. We will teach you.
