COMMITTEES UNDER BAR COUNCIL

The Bar council of India for its proper functioning has segregated its work in various committees that make recommendations to the council. There are various committees under the Bar council. The council has delegated different powers, duties and functions to these committees. The members that comprise these committees are elected from amongst the member of the council.

EXECUTIVE COMMITEE

  1. This committee particularly deals with the issues that are related to the management of funds
  2. Affairs of the staff
  3. Accounts of the council
  4. Allotment of work, management of council
  5. Audit
  6. Library and Legal Publications delegations of work etc.

Apurva Kumar Sharma from Assam is the currently serving as the chairman and N. Manoj Kumar from Kerala is serving the post of vice chairman of the Executive Committee at present.

7.Terms of its members is 2 years.

LEGAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE

  1. This committee keeps a check on the matters related to legal education  and sets standards of legal education in India.
  2. Visits and inspects universities
  3. Recommend the pre-requisites for foreign advocates practicing law in India
  4. Recommends for the recognition or discontinuance of a law degree from a university
  5. The current chairman of legal education committee is Justice A.P Mishra –Former Judge Supreme Court of India.
  6. Term of office of members is 4 years.

DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE

Disciplinary committee is mentioned under section 9. This committee reviews applications by persons against misconduct by any advocate. A complaint against any advocate is referred to the disciplinary committee. The committee further inquires and investigates about the same. The disciplinary committee consists of three members. Two members of the committee are elected from State Bar Council and one from outside the state bar council. The terms of these members are 3 years.

Once a complaint is filed in bar council it is checked and verified first by the bar council itself and then referred to the disciplinary committee, if not it is dismissed.

Once a complaint is filed the chairman of the disciplinary committee fixes the date of hearing within 30 days of the complaint filed.

ADVOCATES WELFARE ASSOCIATION

  1. This Committee looks into the applications made by Advocates for the Welfare funds.
  2. It verifies the application and provides funds
  3. The Advocates Welfare Committee is certified by the Advocates Welfare Fund Act, 2001

LEGAL AID COMMITTEE

The Legal Aid committee provides aids to those requiring legal assistance like poor and needy people etc.

The term of the members of this committee is 2 years.

BUILDING COMMITEE

The building committee as the name suggests is responsible for setting up offices for the council.

The term of its members is 2 years.

RULES COMMITTEE

The rules committee checks and reviews the rules and regulations of the council.

The term of its members is of 2 years.

Other than these, there are Finance Committee, Special or Oversee Committee and All India Bar Examination Committee, Election Committee, Library Committee, Welfare Committee.
